Menari
An expeditious journey through the cities and landscapes of a foreign world.
Menari, from my Sonokoda universe, is a city that seems to rise from the embrace of the waters themselves. It is a labyrinth of canals and bridges, forming an artificial island, its foundations anchored deep into the bed of the lagoon. Layers of stone and timber support platforms where entire districts balance above the waves.
When writing the piece, I experienced the city vividly, as though first-hand – rushing through its narrow and crowded streets. Though it was at night, the city was cast in golden light from countless lights, fires, and lanterns from every corner, their reflections dancing across the canals and beneath the many bridges that bind Menari together. The streets teemed with roadside stalls selling fruits, spices, trinkets, and sizzling street food, their steam and smoke drifting through the air, carrying mouthwatering scents from every corner.
