My digital interpretation of “Amsel” using virtual instruments

“Amsel” is a piece for 14 winds and percussion. I composed it in 2024 after hearing about Yannik Helm’s final project from his concert series ‘Musik aus Fulda’, in which this very work was to be premiered. At the time, I had visions of birds and other garden fauna in my head, and that’s how “Amsel” (Blackbird) came about.

Unlike what often happens in works about birds, however, in “Amsel” you don’t observe a bird from an outsider’s point of view, but rather adopt its perspective. So while composing, I found myself in a monumental world with dangers, feelings and thoughts from the experiences of this little bird.

“Amsel” will have two more movements, which have not yet been completed at the time of writing this blog entry: “Eichhörnchen” (Squirrel) and “Katze” (Cat), the latter of which has already made a guest appearance in Amsel...
